Detailed Itinerary
Open each day to explore the route, experiences and practical details.
Your journey begins with a morning pickup from your hotel in Bishkek. First, leave the capital and drive east toward the Tien Shan mountains.
On the way, stop at Burana Tower, an 11th-century Silk Road minaret near the ancient city of Balasagyn. Here, you can climb the tower, explore the archaeological site and see traditional stone balbals.
Afterward, continue south toward the Kyrgyz Ala-Too mountains. The road gradually climbs toward Kalmak-Ashuu Pass, which reaches about 3,400 meters.
Along the way, enjoy wide mountain views, alpine meadows and seasonal wildflowers. Then, descend toward Song-Kol Lake, one of Kyrgyzstan's most famous high-altitude lakes.
Song-Kol sits at around 3,016 meters and is surrounded by open summer pastures. During the warmer months, local families bring their livestock here and stay in traditional yurts.
Next, check into a yurt camp near the lakeshore. You will have time to walk around the lake, enjoy the peaceful scenery and experience the atmosphere of nomadic life.
In the evening, enjoy a traditional Kyrgyz dinner. Finally, after sunset, the clear mountain sky offers excellent opportunities for stargazing.
Start the day with sunrise over Song-Kol Lake. After breakfast, enjoy some free time near the lakeshore.
If you wish, you can take an optional horseback ride through the surrounding meadows. The open terrain is suitable for beginners and offers beautiful views across the lake.
Afterward, leave Song-Kol and travel toward Issyk-Kul Lake. As you descend from the mountains, the scenery changes from alpine grasslands to drier landscapes.
Next, arrive in Bokonbaevo, a village known for preserving the traditional art of eagle hunting. Here, you will meet a local berkutchi, or eagle hunter.
During the demonstration, learn how golden eagles are trained and cared for. In addition, you can see how the bird responds to the hunter's commands.
This experience also explains the long cultural connection between Kyrgyz hunters and golden eagles. Therefore, it is one of the most memorable cultural stops of the tour.
Finally, transfer to a guesthouse in Bokonbaevo. In the evening, enjoy dinner and a comfortable overnight stay.
After breakfast, leave Bokonbaevo and continue along the southern shore of Issyk-Kul Lake.
First, visit Skazka Canyon, also known as Fairytale Canyon. Wind and water have shaped the sandstone into unusual red, orange and yellow formations.
Take time to walk through the canyon and enjoy the dramatic scenery. Many rock formations resemble castles, animals and other imaginary shapes.
Next, travel to Barskoon Gorge. Here, take a light to moderate walk toward the famous Barskoon Waterfall.
The route passes through mountain scenery and spruce forests. Moreover, the cooler air and flowing water make this a refreshing stop during the journey.
Afterward, continue to Jeti-Oguz Valley. This area is famous for its red sandstone formations, especially the Seven Bulls and Broken Heart rocks.
Take time for photos and learn some of the local legends connected with these formations. Then, continue to Karakol.
Finally, arrive in Karakol in the evening. Check into your hotel and enjoy dinner.
Today begins with an adventurous journey to Altyn Arashan Valley. First, travel from Karakol to the starting point of the mountain road.
Then, continue in a Soviet-style off-road vehicle, such as a UAZ. The rough road follows the Arashan River and passes through forests and mountain terrain.
The off-road section is approximately 12 kilometers. Along the way, expect uneven roads, river crossings and dramatic views.
Eventually, arrive in Altyn Arashan, a beautiful alpine valley surrounded by high peaks. Green meadows, clear streams and mountain scenery make this one of the most scenic places on the route.
Most importantly, the valley is famous for its natural hot springs. Here, you can relax in warm mineral water while enjoying the surrounding mountain views.
If you want to explore more, optional horseback riding is also available. This gives you the chance to travel deeper into the valley.
Afterward, return to Karakol by the same mountain road. Finally, check into your hotel and enjoy dinner.
After breakfast, enjoy a short introduction to Karakol. Depending on the schedule, you may visit the Dungan Mosque or Holy Trinity Cathedral.
Next, leave Karakol and drive along the northern shore of Issyk-Kul Lake. The road offers wide views of the lake and the surrounding Kungoy Ala-Too mountains.
First, stop at Semenovka Gorge and Grigorievka Gorge. These neighboring valleys are known for green pastures, mountain rivers and seasonal wildflowers.
Here, you can take short walks, enjoy the scenery and photograph horses grazing in the open meadows.
Afterward, continue to Kok Moinok Canyon. Its red rock formations create another striking landscape and make it a good stop for photography.
Later, travel toward Chon-Kemin Valley. This protected area is surrounded by mountains, forests and rivers.
The valley offers a peaceful contrast to the busier areas around Issyk-Kul. In addition, optional horseback riding can be arranged here.
Finally, check into a guesthouse in Chon-Kemin. Enjoy dinner and a quiet evening surrounded by nature.
After breakfast, leave Chon-Kemin Valley and begin the return journey to Bishkek.
The drive takes approximately two to three hours. Along the way, pass through the agricultural landscapes of the Chuy Valley.
After arriving in Bishkek, continue with a short city tour. First, visit Ala-Too Square, the main central square of the capital.
Next, walk through Oak Park, one of the city's most pleasant green spaces. Depending on the available time, you may also stop at Osh Bazaar for souvenirs.
Afterward, enjoy some free time in the city. Your guide can also assist with hotel drop-off if required.
Finally, the Kyrgyzstan Nature Road Trip comes to an end in Bishkek. An optional airport transfer can also be arranged.
